1977 Recap and the Next Blog

  • I'm writing this post as my cat is crawling all over my lap and my desk. Hopefully I'll be able to catch any typos before I hit "publish."
  • The 1977 set doesn't get as much attention as a lot of the other sets from the 70s, probably because there aren't as many huge "rookie cards.". I think people get too hung up on the rookie card thing. When I was a kid, I hated getting rookie cards. I wanted cards of the stars and my favorite teams.
  • This was the last of the 660 card sets in the 1970s. The expansion to 26 teams in 1977 was the main reason why Topps bumped the set up to 726 starting in 1978.
  • There were a total of 152 "traded set candidates" in this set. This does not include the 4-player rookie cards. A post will be forthcoming that lists the 132 cards I would put in a boxed "traded set" for the 1977 set.
  • I still plan to blog about other sets from 1977 such as the cloth sticker set, Kellogg's, Hostess, and any others that I happen to come across. When I start getting more time and funds I plan to fill in the gaps of my 1970s collection. But for now I would like to take a break from 1977. Three sets come to mind for me to blog about:
    • 1960 - I've been working on this set since 1980 and am still about 70 cards away from completing it. This is one of my favorite sets.
    • 1978 - I think I need a few cards to complete this one. I thought I had it completed, but when I looked at the binder I saw a few gaps in there. This would fill in a gap in the blogging world.
    • 1981 - This was an important year for card collectors. There were three companies making cards, and Topps put out several other interesting sets (Home Team Series, stickers, scratch-offs, traded)
    • Which set should be next? Please vote in the poll and leave comments as you see fit. Thanks for reading!

  1. Hi Matthew,

I always enjoyed reading your '76 and '77 blogs. I would vote for the 1960 set. My favorite sets are from the 1960s (in case you haven't guessed), and the '60 and '63 sets are the most colorful from the 1st half of the decade. (Plus, the horizontal cards are unusual for their day.)

I only have one non-Phillie from the 1960 set. Do you need Walt Dropo?

(Have you ever been to Prescott, AZ? My son went to college there for 1 year a few years ago. Very scenic area!)

    1. I've been there a few times. I live in the eastern part of the state and there isn't a direct route from me to Prescott. I have to take a "roundabout" route in order to get there. It's nice there.

    4. I don't know if I'm just missing it, but I don't see an email address. Shoot me an email with your address, and I'll send them out.

  3. My vote goes for 1960 as well. Plus for you, you get to write about Mays, McCovey and Cepeda instead of Rob Andrews, Rich Murray and Johnnie LeMaster.

  4. I'd love to see someone tackle the 1981 Topps set. That's the first set I clearly remember collecting in pack form with the goal being to complete a full set. The little hats on the front are classic Topps!

    1. 1981 was an island of card collecting for me (having not otherwise collected cards from 1974 to 1989).

I bought the '81 Topps and Fleer factory sets, then went back to sleep until my pre-school sons and I flooded our house with '90 and '91 Donruss cards!)

    1. I'll send an e-mail. I don't have a whole lot of trade material but perhaps we can work something out. Thanks!

  6. Any set would be fine, but I voted for 1978. For me that would be reliving my childhood. I wasn't around for 1960. And in 1981 (at age 15) I was collecting but the magic was fading.

But I'd be happy with anything.

    1. You and I are the same age. 1981 was the last year that I really was excited about collecting for a while. After that I was a "set buyer" for several years.

  7. Would love to see 1978. It was the 2nd year I collected and the first year I stored my cards in that Topps mail order baseball card "storage locker" thing that had compartments for each team.

    1. The kid across the street had one and I was jealous. Unfortunately for him he got it a year or two before the 1977 expansion. My dad made me a "sports locker" so all was well. :)
