1977 Topps Baseball #27 - Bill Buckner

  • Bill Buckner actually played for the Chicago Cubs in 1977. In January 1977 Bill was traded (with Ivan DeJesus and a minor leaguer) to Chicago for Rick Monday and Mike Garman
  • 1977 Stats:
    • .284, 11 HR, 60 RBI in 122 games at first base
    • Bill didn't play much in May -- he left the game in the third inning on May 4 due to tendonitis in his left ankle. He made only pinch hitting appearances until June 6.
  • 1977 Highlights:
    • March 3: Fractured his right index finger while fielding a ground ball in spring training.
    • Later in spring training: Buckner injured his left ankle. The injury kept Bill out of the lineup until April 19 (the Cubs' tenth game of the season).
    • May 3: Hit three doubles in Chicago's 9-0 win over Houston.
    • Aug 19: Got four hits (including two home runs) and had five RBI against his former team. Ivan DeJesus (who was also involved in the Buckner/Monday deal) had three hits for the Cubs.
    • Aug 20: Hit a 3-run homer in the 7th inning of Chicago's 5-4 win over the Dodgers.
    • Sept 5: Bill's 3-run homer was the key blow as the Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2
