- Johnny Grubb played for the Cleveland Indians in 1977. After the 1976 season the Padres traded him to the Indians (with Fred Kendall and Hector Torres) for George Hendrick.
- Grubb had injury problems in 1977:
- Johnny missed the first few weeks of the season due to a dislocated fibula that he suffered during spring training.
- He missed almost a month in late May and early June.
- Grubb then hurt his hand on a hard check swing on June 14. His batting average dropped 50 points as the team tried to find out what the injury was. He was placed on the disabled list on July 8 and missed the rest of the season. Grubb had surgery on a broken bone in his right hand on August 18.

- 1977 Highlights:
- May 1 - Drove in three runs in the second game of a doubleheader to help the Indians beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-5. In the first game he singled, tripled, and homered, but it wasn't enough as the Brewers beat the Indians 7-3.
- May 15 - Tripled and singled twice in Cleveland's 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.
