- In 1977 Dan Spillner was converted to a full-time reliever. He spent the first month of the season in AAA Hawaii and was recalled in early May after making three starts for the Islanders. Dan appeared in 76 games and had a decent year. Spillner continued to be a full-time reliever until 1979.

- May 20 - Earned his first save of the season as he pitched 3 2/3 innings without allowing a run. The Padres beat the Montreal Expos 12-4.
- July 3 - Pitched 3 1/3 innings of shutout ball and struck out four batters. Dan earned the win as the Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-7.

I believe Spillner holds the record for the most walks for a batter with only 10 hits. He walked 19 times in his career. That seems quite high for a pitcher like him.
