- Before the 1977 season Bobby Murcer (with Steve Ontiveros and a minor leaguer) were traded to the Chicago Cubs for Bill Madlock and Rob Sperring
- Both Murcer and Madlock were involved in contract disputes with their clubs.

- 1977 Highlights:
- Feb 11 - Traded to the Cubs in a multi-player deal that netted Bill Madlock for the Giants
- June 20 - Drove in six runs with a double and two home runs against his old team as the Cubs beat the Giants 10-9.
- June 26 - Hit a home run and had a sacrifice fly in Chicago's 5-2 win over the New York Mets.
- Aug 8 - Promised a boy in a hospital who was fighting cancer that he would hit a home run and a double in the upcoming game. Bobby didn't quite keep the promise -- he hit two home runs instead. The boy died two weeks later.
