- Gaylord Perry had a good year, going 15-12 for the Texas Rangers. The Rangers were in contention for the AL West title for much of the season. After the 1977 season the club wanted to save some money and get younger, so they traded Perry to the San Diego Padres for $125,000 and pitcher Dave Tomlin.

- May 12 - Pitched a four-hit shutout against the Kansas City Royals.
- May 18 - Became the third pitcher to win 100 games in both leagues as he beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3. At the time Cy Young and Jim Bunning were the only other two pitchers to accomplish this feat.

Gaylord sure does look gray. You'd think that with his accomplishments he'd get a card number ending in 0, or at least 5.
