1977 Topps Baseball #61 -- Manny Sanguillen

  • On 5 November 1976, Manny Sanguillen was traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Oakland A's for manager Chuck Tanner.
  • The 1977 season was the only season in Sanguillen's career in which he played for someone besides the Pirates. Sanguillen was traded back to the Pirates just before the 1978 season.
  • This was Sanguillen's last season as a full-time player.
  • Is Manny Sanguillen the most blogged-about player in the history of card blogs?
  • 1977 Stats: .275, 6 HR, 58 RBI in 152 games
  • 1977 Highlights:
    • Aug 8 - Hit into a triple play against the Texas Rangers.
    • Aug 26 - Went 3 for 5 with a double and a RBI to help the A's beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-4.
    • Sept 21 - Manny's two-run homer in the top of the 9th gave the A's an 8-6 lead over the Chicago White Sox. Oakland went on to win the game and eliminated Chicago from the race for the AL West title.

I think Oscar Gamble might have him beat.

  2. Someone suggested to Randy Jones on Facebook last year that they have a "BBQ cook-off" between ex-ballplayers. They could have Jones, Manny Sanguillen, Boog Powell, and Greg Luzinski in it. Jones liked the idea, but nothing ever came of it. I think it would be a great show to do on Food Network.

  3. Never had Randy's or Luszinski's but Boog's destroys Mannys or Gorman's. PNC is a great park, but Manny's food was crap
