- Jim Rooker had several strong years as a starting pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1970s. He didn't make any all star teams, but he got the job done. The 1977 season was Jim's last one as an above .500 pitcher.

- 1977 Highlights:
- April 12 - Attended a school board meeting to go to bat for a student athlete who had been suspended from participation in school activities because of a run-in with a school employee.
- June 3 - Shut out the Chicago Cubs on five hits. At the time the Cubs were in first place in the NL East. After the game Rooker was quoted as saying that a couple of the Cubs players were playing over their heads.
- Aug 12 - Went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI, had a stolen base, and scored the winning run in Pittsburgh's 3-2 win over the New York Mets. Jim had a complete game victory and improved his record to 10-6.
- Dec 28 - Had a metal plate placed in his broken right arm. He suffered the injury in a car accident in October.
