- John "Bad Dude" Stearns had the first of four All Star seasons in 1977. John took over the regular catching duties from Jerry Grote. This was the first of only three seasons in which he would catch over 100 games.

- May 22 - Called on manager Joe Frazier to crack down on the attitude problems that were plaguing the Mets.
- June 1 - Hit a grand slam to help the Mets beat the Montreal Expos 6-4.
- July 13 - John was kind enough to give some fans a lift home after the big New York City blackout fouled up some plans.
- Sept 10 - Hit a 2-run double in the 9th inning as the Mets scored five times to win 7-2 over the Chicago Cubs.
