- This was Al Oliver's last season as a Pittsburgh Pirate. After the 1977 season he was part of the four team trade that brought Bert Blyleven and John Milner to Pittsburgh. Oliver ended up going to the Texas Rangers.

- 1977 Highlights:
- Apr 23 - Went 4 for 5 to help the Pirates beat the New York Mets 6-5.
- May 1 - Al's home run in the bottom of the 9th tied the game 3-3. Al then hit a single in the 10th inning to beat the Houston Astros 4-3.
- Aug 13 - Al was fined an undisclosed sum and suspended for four days for an August 11 confrontation with umpire Bruce Froemming. Froemming called Oliver out for failing to touch first base as he was running out a double. Oliver charged Froemming. Pittsburgh first base coach Al Monchak attempted to stop Oliver. Monchak got between Oliver and Froemming, but Oliver collided with him and the momentum carried Monchak into Froemming. Al returned to action on August 17.
