- There isn't much to say about Mr. Schmidt that hasn't already been said in the numerous card blog entries below. Mike didn't lead the NL in any categories in 1977, but he had a good year, was an NL All Star for the third time, and won his second Gold Glove.
- That's an impressive stat that is referenced in the cartoon.
- 1977 stats:
- Regular Season: .271, 38 HR, 101 RBI, 114 runs scored
- NLCS: .063 (1 for 16)
- 1977 Highlights:
- June 30 - Tied a National League record held by Ralph Kiner by hitting his 14th home run in the month of June. The major league record is 15 (Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Bob Johnson).
- July 8 - Got in a fight with Pittsburgh pitcher Bruce Kison. Kison hit Schmidt with a pitch after Garry Maddox had homered to give the Phillies the lead. Schmidt and Kison exchanged words and a benches clearing brawl ensued. It had been the third time Schmidt had been hit by pitches in four days.
- Aug 14 - Went 4 for 5 with two home runs, six RBI, and four runs scored as the Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 10-2.
- Oct 4 - Singled in the winning run in game 1 of the National League Championship Series. It was the only game the Phillies won as the LA Dodgers took the series three games to one.

This was a favorite card of mine as a kid. Growing up I startting collecting in the early 80's and I somehow was able to acquire this card. It seemed old and vintage compared to my newer 80's cards. It will always be a classic in my mind.
