- On March 15, 1977 Jim Todd was traded to the Chicago Cubs for Joe Coleman. Todd was one of 13 unsigned Oakland players (and also the A's player rep). Todd was told in early March that if the unsigned players weren't signed they would be traded.

- 1-1, 9.10 ERA in 20 games with Chicago
- 3-0, 1.33 ERA in 19 games with AAA Wichita
- 1977 Highlights:
- May 16 - Earned the victory in spite of allowing 2 runs in 2 1/3 innings against San Diego.
- As a side note: although the Cubs were in second place (2 games out of first), they managed to draw only 6,992 fans
- July 25 - Sent to AAA Wichita to make room for Gene Clines, who was activated from the disabled list.
- Sept 2 - Recalled from AAA Wichita (he wasn't used by the Cubs in September)
- Oct 25 - Traded with pitcher Steve Hamrick to the Seattle Mariners for Pete Broberg and Larry Cox
