- Jeff Burroughs was traded from the Texas Rangers to the Atlanta Braves for five players before the 1977 season. Although the acquisition of Burroughs and the signing of Gary Matthews and Andy Messersmith were steps in the right direction, the Braves were still thought to be a few players (especially pitchers) short of being a contending ballclub.
