- This was Bud Harrelson's last year with the New York Mets. The Mets were trying out Doug Flynn (among others) at shortstop starting in July.

- May 17 - Hit a 3-run double to lead the Mets to an 8-1 win over the San Francisco Giants.
- May 31 - Scored the tying run and tripled in a run later in the game as the Mets beat the Montreal Expos 6-2. It was Joe Torre's first game as the Mets' player-manager.
- Dec 7 - The Mets traded for shortstop Tim Foli. Foli was acquired to replace Bud as the Mets' starting shortstop. A few weeks later Bud was quoted as saying that he would like to stay with the Mets, even in a reserve role. Harrelson later changed his mind and asked to be traded in early March of 1978. The Mets honored his request and Harrelson was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in late March.
