- This was the last year of John Mayberry's run as the starting first baseman for the Kansas City Royals. He had an off year in 1977. The year didn't start off well when Mayberry got in an argument with a rental car clerk and was arrested for disorderly conduct. John arrived late for game 4 of the 1977 ALCS and played poorly. John was benched for game 5 and manager Whitey Herzog later demanded that he be traded, so he was sold to the Toronto Blue Jays at the end of spring training in 1978.
