- This was the second of five fantastic years for J.R. Richard (including his shortened 1980 season). This is the only year of the five in which Richard didn't get Cy Young Award or All Star consideration.

- July 11 - Pitched a five-hit shutout against the Cincinnati Reds. On his next start on July 16 J.R. would shut the Reds out again. Richard was 4-1 against the Reds in 1977.
- Aug 27 - Pitched a three hit shutout as the Astros beat the Montreal Expos 4-0. Richard gave up no walks and struck out seven batters.
